TAKE OFF of the first swim wave on the silky shores of Port Beach on 8th August 09.....
Our inaugural Clogherhead Triathlon took place on 8th August on Port Beach Clogherhead and we're delighted to say that it was a great success!
We had over 310 competitors racing on what turned out to be a perfect conditioned day for racing. With no injuries to report, we would like to say a huge THANK YOU!! to all competitors, spectators, our club marshalls, the local community, all our race partners and sponsors (see below) and Triathlon Ireland for helping to create such a fun and safe race.

The race commenced with a beach start broken down into 3 waves with several hundred spectators cheering on the athletes. Out of the water first was Stephen Early who held a slender lead over Aoife O Connor from Phoenix Tri club. 3rd out of the water was Drogheda local Eric Clinton from Belpark followed by a bunch including Hugh Carberry also from Phoenix.
Some fast transitions and off they went on the bike the leader being led by a Garda motorbike. A portion of the roads on the bike leg and run route had been closed for the race. Just over 30 mins later the order had changed and Eric Clinton was the first to hit T2 followed by Carberry and Early. All 3 looked strong as they set out on the run but it was Early who proved the stronger as he posted the fastest run split of the day in just under 17 mins to win the first Pulse Clogherhead triathlon. Clinton came in second and Carberry was third. On the women's side Aoife O Connor led from start to finish winning comfortably over Irene Walsh of 3rock and Aileen Flynn of Piranha coming home in third.
This was a first triathlon for many people including a number of locals who all posted respectable times for their first time out. The day was topped off with the coast guard helicopter doing a number of flyovers over the beach and transition to the thrill of everyone watching. We look forward to seeing everyone back next year!
