Peninsula Sprint Tri 2012

I had always wondered if many southerners, or even southern northerners, venture this far north during marching season and the entries list, packed full of Peninsula TC, Olympic TC and QUB TC and local entries, answered that question for this year, but I’ll give you five good reasons to venture to the shores of Ballywalter next year for what was a fast, well organised and relaxed sea sprint!

No.1 – Only a two and half hour drive from Dublin – involving a meander through the Down drumlins and passing through Castlewellan (the great location of the Mourne (Olympic) Tri), followed by beautiful views of the Mourne Mountains sweeping down to the sea and then a ferry ride across the mouth of Strangford Lough to Portaferry.

No.2 – A  one street town right on the coast with a well organised race location and views to Scotland (on what was a clear day).

No.3 – A running start on silky sands.

No. 4 – A fast two lap bike course passing through the town and a flat coastal road run route (Kilkee without the hill, oh and half the distance)

No. 5 – Chilled out but capable organisers, particularly considering this was their second triathlon, and enthusiastic marshals.

For anyone travelling back the same day, the 19th hole has to be the food in The Cuan in Strangford!

This is definitely a race that would suit a tri newbie and one for a fast time.

Now, are there any prizes for being the first Pulse member to race a tri and does anyone have suggestions for the tri equivalent of “the 19th Hole”?
